A More Mature 'Odd' Offering From Risk-Taking Panic At The Disco
For each of the 2.2 million teens and preteens who bought Panic at the Disco's 2005 debut, "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out," there's a critic or older sibling waiting to dismiss the Las Vegas quartet.

The backlash isn't surprising, as the band's early songs were bound to be divisive. The musicians — then teenagers themselves — brought adolescent melodrama to the dance floor, using splashy '80s synths and showy instrumentation to predict the shape of emo to come.

No less ambitious, yet far more likable, the group's recently released sophomore effort, "Pretty. Odd." mines an earlier era of pop history. The new material suggests the band members unwrapped a few Beatles and Kinks records on their 20th birthdays.

[...] "We didn't really know what we were trying to do," drummer Spencer Smith says from Miami, days into the band's headlining stint on the Honda Civic Tour, which stops Saturday at the Chevrolet Theatre in Wallingford. Read More.

Panic at the Disco Finally Calms Down Enough to Complete New CD
Panic at the Disco endured its share of comparisons -- not always flattering -- to modern pop bands like Fall Out Boy and the Killers as the group's platinum-certified 2005 debut CD, ''A Fever You Can't Sweat Out,'' turned the band into arena-headlining stars seemingly overnight.

Now with Panic at the Disco's second CD, ''Pretty. Odd,'' in stores, a different comparison has been surfacing -- to the Beatles. Panic at the Disco singer Brendon Urie said any parallels have more to do with the group's philosophy in making ''Pretty. Odd'' than stylistic similarities.

''They're one of our favorite bands,'' Urie said in a recent phone interview. ''They wrote timeless music, and you can always go back to it and it never gets old. I think in that sense, that's what we wanted to kind of create, not just specifically going after one band's sound, but just the philosophy of creating something different to make it timeless.'' Panic Stricken By Spurt Of Musical Growth
Puberty is brutal. Voices crack, pimples erupt, hair sprouts and hormones surge. When it’s finally over, most of us try to distance ourselves from any remnants of our former childish selves. But of course there’s still plenty of growing up to do.

Las Vegas’ Panic at the Disco is emerging from the throes of a typical pubescent transition. When the band comes to the Bank of America Pavilion on Sunday in support of its recently released sophomore CD (“Pretty. Odd.”), fans will get a taste of the quartet’s newfound maturity: less theatrics, more musical focus.

Panic frontman Brendan Urie says it’s all just part of growing up.

“There’s a big age gap between the two CDs,” Urie said from a tour stop in Myrtle Beach, S.C. “We were 16 and 17 when we wrote the old songs. Now we’re in our early 20s. It’s a major difference.” Read More.

Panic at the Disco: No Promises For a Third Album in 2008
“Every time we say anything, we have to [go back] and say ‘No, that’s not what we meant,” laughs Panic at the Disco’s Ryan Ross, referring to recent reports the band had enough material for a third album to come out later this year. “We have some songs,” he clarifies. “But who knows if they’ll be for anything.”

The band is currently in the middle of their two-month headlining tour for the recently released Pretty. Odd.. Bassist Jon Walker says Panic never really stopped writing songs after recording the album, but emphasizes it’s been “nothing more than recording them on an acoustic guitar.” Though their busy touring schedule takes them through at least the end of the year with gigs in the States and abroad, Ross says he’d like to do a record when things wind down, “Just so we don’t have to write all new songs because we’re sick of these.” - RS.com

Panic Breeds Clarity
Three significant and, to cite Panic at the Disco’s latest album title, pretty odd events led the band to release one of the year’s most pleasantly surprising albums.

[...] As an album, “Pretty.Odd” is far less odd and much more pretty, a mature collection of songs streaked with notes of dad favorites Tom Petty, Queen and, no joke, Ricky Skaggs. PATD singer Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith explained the band’s hyper-evolution and why eating fan-made baked goods is a terrible, terrible idea.

Maxim magazine recently reviewed a couple albums without actually listening to them. How would you review “Pretty. Odd.” without having heard it?
Brendon Urie: First off, that would suck! Read More.
